Popular 3D model repository, Sketchfab, today announced support for virtual reality headsets. What does this mean? Well, you can now view 3D models in your VR headset and experience full immersion in the model so that you work with it better than using a mouse or finger for navigation.
At launch, Sketchfab’s app will include support for some pre-selected 3D models so that you can get started however the company plants to expand support to all 750,000 3D models available on the website. It is surprising that it has this long though since viewing 3D models in a VR headset seems like a natural fit for the technology. Being able to view your model in a 3D space without having to rely on a game engine will be particularly useful for 3D artists.
The Sketchfab VR app works with the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Gear VR and Google Cardboard thanks to native apps, if you want to get a quick glimpse of how this works, Sketchfab has a WebVR version as well that will run in your browser.
